Women’s History Week in Sonoma County

When was Women’s History Month created?

The first ever Women’s History Week took place in 1978 in Sonora, California. It was organized by the Education Task Force of the Sonora area, and it was intended to highlight women and their contributions to society. The event was a major success, and it marked the beginning of what would eventually become an international observance, Women’s History Month. The following year, in 1979, a conference about women’s history was held at Sarah Lawrence College. This event would prove to be an important moment for the growth of Women’s History Month. The participants of this conference, including historian Gerda Lerner, were inspired by the success of Sonoma County’s celebration and decided to organize similar celebrations within their own organizations, communities, and school districts.

The eighties were a period of great change, but also of huge achievements for women and feminism. In 1980, President Carter issued a proclamation declaring the week of March 8 National Women’s History Week in the United States. The success and momentum from this event prompted Congress to pass a resolution in 1981. The next year, 1982, marked the first official Women’s History Week, and although it started in the United States, it soon spread to countries around the globe.

The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution, and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum all commemorate Women’s History Month by hosting special events and programs throughout March: lectures, art exhibitions, virtual workshops, roundtables, or meetings are just a few of the activities they organize. There are plenty of events for everyone to get involved in recognizing the positive role women have had in American history.

It all started in 2021 with fascinating archaeological posts from the Szent István Király Museum (Székesfehérvár). There were also exhibitions in the Hungarian National Museum, such as ’Women in Art’ that drew a lot of attention. In addition, several other schools, universities and organizations also held events to celebrate this special occasion. More importantly, this gave an opportunity for people across the country to learn about and appreciate the incredible contributions of women throughout Hungarian history. This includes learning about prominent female figures in politics, culture, art and science, as well as recognizing all the amazing women who have made a difference in Hungary’s past and present.
