Freepik Mystic: How to create realistic AI images with Freepik AI image generator

Over the past few years, AI image generators have evolved dramatically. We’ve gone from seeing weird, three-legged figures to hyper-realistic, anatomically accurate AI images. This rapid advancement in AI technology has paved the way for some of the most capable image generators available today. One of the biggest platforms that offers these image generator tools is Freepik. Recently, the company introduced its most advanced and powerful mode yet, called Mystic.

In this article, we’ll explore what Mystic mode is all about, evaluate the quality of the AI images it creates, and explore how you can combine it with other AI-powered tools from Freepik. Let’s get started!

What is Freepik Mystic?

Freepik Mystic is a new mode available through a hard-work collaboration between the Magnific.ai and Freepik teams, carefully curated by several professional photographers, digital artists, VFX specialists, designers, and many hours of in-house specialists with a very good eye for tweaking every little detail.

This mode is actually a whole workflow that activates one of the best foundational models, Flux. Freepik Mystic inner workings are based on finetunes of several processes by Stable Diffusion, Flux and Magnific.ai technology.

Its stunning outcomes are a testament to this, creating breath-taking AI images in high resolution (2k), without extra steps needed.

Flux AI is a brand new image model from Blackforest Labs. It is a suite of text-to-image models that define a new state-of-the-art (SOTA) in image detail, prompt adherence, style diversity, and scene complexity for text-to-image synthesis.

It comes in three variants:

  • Flux.1 Pro: This offers state-of-the-art performance in AI image generation, delivering top-notch prompt following, visual quality, image detail, and output diversity.
  • Flux.1 Dev: This is an open-weight, guidance-distilled model designed for non-commercial use. It is distilled from Flux.1 Pro, achieving similar quality and prompt adherence while being more efficient than a typical model of the same size.
  • Flux.1 Schnell: This is their fastest model and is designed for local development and personal use. It is openly available under an Apache 2.0 license.

All public Flux.1 models are equipped with multimodal and parallel diffusion transformer blocks and boast 12 billion parameters. These techniques improve upon earlier diffusion models by using flow matching, a simpler and more efficient method for training generative systems.

How to create realistic AI images with Freepik Mystic

Create realistic AI images

Creating realistic AI images with Freepik Mystic is straightforward. Start by heading over to Freepik Mystic page, selecting the AI Image Generator on the menu, and creating an account. Make sure you’re subscribed to access the Mystic mode. Once logged in, navigate to the menu options, where you’ll find the full suite of AI tools. Click on the ‘AI Image Generator’ option and start typing your prompts.

You’ll be redirected to the image generator dashboard. Expand the Mode menu, and you’ll find Mystic at the bottom of the list.

Next, describe the image you want in the prompt field or upload a reference image. You can leave the rest of the parameters at their default settings. Here’s an example:

Prompt: A young Caucasian woman with long brown hair wearing a yellow dress against a patterned background

Wow. The detail is incredible—the skin texture, the individual strands of hair, all rendered in stunning 2K resolution. And it only took less than a minute to generate! The speed of generation is another impressive feature of Mystic.

If your text description is brief, you can also turn on the “AI prompt” toggle.

For example, if your prompt is simply “A dog,” the AI will automatically expand it to something more descriptive, like “A black German Shepherd standing alert on a rocky hilltop with a panoramic view of a valley during sunset.”

This feature is handy if you’re not a fan of typing long descriptions.

Examples of AI image generator prompts

Let’s check out some examples of prompts and the resulting AI images created with Mystic mode:

Prompt: A strong and ferocious bull standing on the bank with horns on its head, light-colored hair, clear reflection of the buffalo in the water, frontal angle, real details, high-definition photo

Again, the result is fantastic! It looks like a National Geographic shot. Not only is the image quality top-notch, but Mystic also excels in composition and camera settings. Mystic mode doesn’t just generate high-quality AI images; it captures the essence of professional photography.

Another impressive capability of Mystic is rendering accurate text on images—something most other AI image generators struggle with. Here’s an example:

Prompt: Polaroid photo with VSCO filter, 1990, gorgeous woman, night, flash photo, blonde, cute, young face, beautiful shadows, tropical plants, urban clothing, inside an apartment, DSLR, holding a sign written in ballpoint pen on a notebook saying “Freepik Mystic is awesome!”

Incredible! The image not only looks photorealistic but also perfectly captures the specific style and atmosphere described in the prompt. Even popular AI generators like Midjourney and Dall-E 3 struggle to render text accurately, but Mystic handles it with ease.

Now that we’ve seen how good Mystic is at creating realistic AI images, let’s explore other styles, such as 3D and illustration. To change the image style, open the ‘Style’ menu and select the one you want.

Here’s an example where I chose 3D and fed it this prompt:

Prompt: Fun girl doll for daily life, fashion products, trendy figures, as new product development and design, attracting much attention, author: Yoshitomo Nara, Junko Mizuno, Takashi Murakami, the design inspiration of the three artists is combined, abstract art, simple shape, abandoning figurative realism, artistic masterpiece, resin material, white background, soft lighting, shot with Canon EOS R8, Unreal Engine 5, Octane rendering, RTX turned on, art display, award-winning works

Perfect! The images are smooth and adorable—ideal for artists working on 3D graphics or those seeking inspiration for 3D printing or illustrations.

Mystic mode also shines in creating 3D images of home furnishings, like this sofa:

Prompt: sofa and single sofa and coffee table, inversion, disassembly, multiple perspectives, asymmetry, material expression, conceptual guidance Ultimate simplicity Modern Chinese Leather Sofa Chinese-style Zen Fusion Traditional Chinese elements Modern design concepts Simplicity Elegance Serenity Natural materials Minimalist lines Tranquility Comfort Blend with nature

The possibilities here are endless, limited only by your imagination. Now let’s do some illustrations, particularly in anime style art. Here’s a sample prompt:

Prompt: Anime-style boy and girl in a happy pose, wearing a blue cap with a teddy bear motif on the head, against a white background. They are wearing colorful clothes , including jeans pants, and the girl is holding a game controller in her hand. The girl has long, pink hair, in the anime style. This is a full-body portrait.

Beyond the overall look and aesthetics, I’m impressed by Mystic’s coherence with the text prompt. Many other image generators would struggle to render the blue cap with a teddy bear motif, but Mystic nailed it, creating the perfect anime-themed image.

You can also mix the text rendering capability with an art style like Cartoon Fun. Check this out:

Prompt: A photo of a sign painted on a building brick wall saying “Freepik Mystic is the best”

Pretty cool, right? There’s no need for professional graphic illustrators when you can generate such amazing text art for your projects or events.

Apart from selecting image styles, you can also adjust parameters like color, camera settings, and lighting. Feel free to experiment with these settings to unlock endless creative possibilities.

How to enhance image quality?

The fun doesn’t stop at AI image generation. Freepik also offers image enhancement tools, such as an AI Image Upscaler and retouching options. Once you’ve generated your raw image with Mystic mode, click on the Upscale button, and you’ll be redirected to the upscaling dashboard.

Here, you can adjust the resolution, image style, and creativity level when enhancing the base image. For example, set the resolution to 2K, use the default image style, set the imagination level to subtle, and prompt with “A young Caucasian woman with long brown hair wearing a yellow dress against a patterned background.”

Here’s the before and after result:

Before:

After:

Notice that the upscaled image is now more detailed and clearer than the original. If you want a more dramatic change, you can set the imagination level to vivid or wild. Here’s the result after setting the imagination level to wild:

Other image enhancement tools

Apart from the image upscaler tool, you can also do other image customizations:

  • Reimagine: Generate variations of an existing image.
  • Expand: Expand or zoom out of your image by letting the AI fill in the extended sides.
  • Retouch: Alter specific portions of your image using AI.

The Reimagine feature allows you to create infinite variations of your image. After generating an image, bring it to the Reimagine dashboard, adjust the parameters, and click on the Reimagine button. The AI will generate four variations with each transaction.

That’s incredible! I love how Freepik Reimagine stays true to the original image composition while making subtle changes. You can tweak the settings to adjust the level of variation you desire.

The Resize feature works by extending or ‘outpainting’ your image. After generating with Mystic, bring the image to the Resize dashboard and adjust the input based on how much area you want the AI to fill in.

Finally, you can make selective adjustments with Retouch. Upload your Mystic-generated AI image and select the portion you want to alter. The AI will make the adjustments while keeping the rest of the image intact.

Describe the change you want and click on the Generate button. The AI will seamlessly fill in those empty areas. Look at the final results below.

That’s so cool. You no longer need to go to Photoshop and manually edit portions of your image! Freepik tools can save you a lot of time creating your digital art.

Conclusion

Freepik Mystic is, without a doubt, the most capable image generation mode in Freepik. The level of coherency and photorealism to create AI images it achieves is nothing short of astonishing. It’s so good that it pushes many other AI image generator tools to the side. The fact that this is just the initial release of Mystic only adds to the excitement. Imagine what it could achieve two or three iterations down the line—if this is what it can do now, the future looks incredibly promising.

What really stands out to me is how intuitive and seamless the integration of Freepik Mystic is with Freepik’s other AI tools. You’re not just generating images; you’re stepping into a whole ecosystem of creativity where every step of the process, from creation to refinement, happens effortlessly on one platform. There’s no need to switch between multiple tabs or apps, and that’s a game changer, especially for someone like me who often juggles between different tools and software for image editing.

I find that this seamless workflow isn’t just about convenience—it actually enhances creativity. When all the tools are at your fingertips, you can experiment more freely, iterate faster, and ultimately create better work. I can’t wait to see how this image generator tool evolves and what new creative possibilities it will unlock in the future.
