Disney artist reveals tips for creating art in mixed media and keeping originals
Joel Payne, a Disney interpretive artist, has written an article on CreativeBloq about painting techniques which contains very interesting tips for other artists. As he points out, one of the problems that digital artists experiment is that they don’t have originals.
This is why he has developed a mixed media technique, so he can keep more originals than traditional artists and more value than 100% digital painters. Firstly, he paints the characters on a real canvas and after he scans them, he uses Autodesk’s Maya to develop the 3D part.
After modeling, Corel Painter allows him to give a more painterly look to the pictures after applying lighting and texture using his canvas paintings. When he is done working with digital media, and after printing, he still has to achieve coverage of at least 50% in acrylic paint in order to be able meet mixed media criteria on the final master.
You can learn much more from his explanation of this process on the original post on CreativeBloq’s website.
