Winter 2020 Visual Trends: Guide to Vector Design
In this past year, we’ve seen a few changes in graphic design trends. Shapes move towards more organic and free combinations, and color choices are also different.
Winter is around the corner, and we want all our contributors to make the most of their content. That’s why we’ve prepared a brief guide on winter visual trends for vectors. In this first guide, we walk you through the most important trends and themes on Freepik (according to users’ searches), just to give you an idea of what to design next.
I know you are excited to see what we’ve got for you. But first, copy and paste these two tips and take them into account every time you upload content:
👉 Tip 1: when tagging the designs on the contributor panel, make sure the words you use are relevant and memorable. Avoid using generic words that don’t describe nor are related to the resource. It will help users to find your content!
👉 Tip 2: it’s important to be on time. If you’re creating resources of a specific theme, you must upload them in advance, at least 2 months, so they are published on time for users to download them!
(Also, you can download for free a set of winter color palettes so you can apply them to your resources!)
1. Winter designs
Obviously, these are the season’s basics. Winter designs normally depict traditional winter-related elements and colors.
Some of the most popular winter elements you can include in your resources are snow, mountains, snowmen, snowflakes, cabins, hot drinks, scarves, fireplaces, and other cozy objects and spaces.
Winter is also about nature, although floral elements turn into pine cones, branches, and holly bushes.
In general, winter is associated with cool colors such as light blue, grey, and white. However, not everything is cool. Many of the scenes we recall when talking about winter are indoors and give the feel of coziness and warmth. These sorts of images are related to warm colors such as yellow, red, or even brown.
Besides traditional winter colors, we’ve seen natural and neutral tones mixed with Pantone Classic Blue in many designs.
Some popular palettes combine neutral and earth-like colors with blue, green, and stone-like colors. However, it doesn’t mean that we forgot about the rest of the colors because the use of meaningful and bold colors is still trendy.
When it comes to the style, we see a preference for organic and relaxed shapes, flowing elements, and textures, which is somewhat opposed to the last few years’ straight-lined flat compositions. Designs also tend to emulate a powder-like effect, perhaps imitating the gouache technique.
In general, designs are fun and irregular, leaving behind symmetric compositions. As a result, the hand-drawn style continues to be a popular trend.
Other styles that have proved to be trendy these days are stickers and lettering. Combining different typographies in a text, especially if they are hand-drawn, will give your resources a modern and effortless touch.
2. Christmas resources
For many of us, Christmas is a very cold holiday. But it’s also that magic time shared with family and friends.
For our contributors, it’s also the best time to make their content profitable. We’ve just launched our Christmas campaign! You can participate now and get some extra money for your resources.
We all know the most typical Xmas elements: the tree, Santa Claus, presents, socks, candies, Xmas decorations, mistletoe, and those ugly sweaters (and many others!).
Christmas color palettes are also a bit different this year. However, Xmas will be always Xmas, so most of the resources are characterized by the holiday colors: green, red, and gold. Here are a couple of examples with these colors:
However, if you’re up to creating something original, you can try out different colors. Opt for neutral color palettes combined with blue, pink, or green. These may not look very Christmas-like, but we promise you the result is quite good (and trendy!). Have a look at these examples:
3. New Year, new calendar
There is no better way to welcome the new year than with a calendar. They are a must within Freepik, as many users are looking to start the year with good planning.
You can create calendars with photos or give them an original touch with your designs. Don’t be afraid to experiment and create something new (but trendy). From more abstract and colorful compositions to neutral and minimalist designs, you choose!
Before uploading your design, make sure that it is user-friendly, that is, the distribution of the elements and the size are suitable. Here are some examples:
4. Winter, time for sales
One of the most demanded resources among users is designs for winter sales. The year begins and ends with all kinds of discounts. Many businesses use the holiday season to offer their best discounts.
Besides, many places in Europe begin their sales period at the beginning of the year. This translates into thousands of users looking for this content. Here are some of the formats you can use:
- Instagram posts (super trendy now)
When it comes to customizable sales designs like banners, templates, etc., the customization must be easy for the user. So, make sure you include text fields so they can be modified later.
Regarding the elements, they will depend on the topic of your resource. For instance, elements in a winter banner will differ from a fashion template. Thus, before designing, you must do some research and be clear on the sector you’re going to focus on: is it fashion? Furniture? Electronics? etc.
The colors you work with will also depend on the theme. In this case, you can use the color palettes we talked about before: you can go natural, more Christmassy, or winter-like.
Let’s take an example. If you choose to create Instagram post templates for a fashion retailer, you can opt for neutral and elegant colors, as these give a sophisticated touch to the design. Here are some other ideas:
Again, it will be determined by the theme you choose. However, you can also apply the styles mentioned above.
5. World AIDS Day
It’s not a winter trend, but World AIDS Day is celebrated on December 1, so you can also create content related to this day.
The most characteristic symbol is the red ribbon. Other elements that appear in these resources are the hands or the planet. However, you can choose to do it differently if you want, as long as it’s related to the theme, and it’s not offensive.
Red is the main color in World AIDS Day’s resources. You can mix it with other red tones or lighter colors such as grey, blue, or white.
Typography plays a leading role. You can include “World AIDS Day”, but also other positive messages related to the day. We recommend that you go to official sources to select the appropriate text.
6. Hygge and the new normality
A term that has gained great popularity is hygge, a Danish and Norwegian concept for “coziness”, that is, time spent inside the house warm, in front of the fireplace, and spending time with the family.
The truth is that we are not surprised that this term has become so popular, as it’s the perfect activity for current times. That’s why it’s grown a trendy theme among our users.
You can create resources that reflect the hygge concept or represent scenes related to the new normality, such as remote work, the Internet as a new communication channel, or social distancing.
- Elements: Hygge-related content represents scenes at home, with elements that create a pleasant and comfortable environment, such as blankets, hot chocolate, a book, a sofa, etc.
- Color palette: neutral colors and stone tones are the stars of these resources. They evoke a comfortable and warm atmosphere.
- Style: The hand-drawn and fun style fits perfectly with the theme. Add text by combining fonts, or create designs in the shape of stickers.
- Elements: recreate spaces that show the current circumstances. You can include people social-distancing in a restaurant or someone working from home. Another option is to create workspace designs.
- Color palette: In this case, you can work with various color palettes. However, make sure they are consistent with the theme of the resource.
- Style: Opt for trendy styles. Take a look at Freepik and the resources available. You can go from a more casual style to a more serious style.
If you want to upload winter resources, now it’s the time. Create quality content and upload it in advance following our tips. As we promised, below, you can download the color palette set so you can use it in your designs (just download it and use the eyedropper to copy the same color).
